Advice for applying

Our top tips

Keen to apply for an APTUS apprenticeship? Read our tips to maximise your chance of joining the programme.

Check you are eligible

Make sure you meet all the necessary qualifications and conditions, such as school grades or work permissions, before applying to avoid any surprises.

Research the energy sector

Take time to understand the industry, including the current trends and challenges of the energy transition, so you can speak confidently about why you're interested in energy and where you see yourself fitting in. Sites like OEUK and Energy Voice are a great place to start.

Know the role

Read up on all the apprenticeship courses but especially the specific one you’re interested in applying for. Each course has unique responsibilities, so knowing these will help you make a strong case for why you’re a good match for your chosen course.

Prepare a strong personal statement

Share why you’re interested in an energy sector apprenticeship and career. Add any relevant experience, skills or qualities you bring. Keep it clear and focused on what makes you a standout candidate.

Practise aptitude tests

Our application process includes two aptitude tests, covering reasoning and numerical assessments. Familiarise yourself with similar tests online to feel confident and prepared.

Double-check your application

Before submitting, review all sections of your application for accuracy, especially details like your grades and contact information.

Prepare for the interview

Think about times when you've shown teamwork, problem-solving and interest in the energy sector. Be ready to talk about them, as well as your strengths, and areas you’re excited to develop.

Be professional and authentic at interview

Dress appropriately and stay calm. Use your own voice to answer questions genuinely rather than trying to guess what you think the selectors want to hear. The selection panel values honesty and a clear passion for the industry.

Ask questions

During the interview or on your application, ask thoughtful questions that show you’re genuinely curious about the apprenticeships, and their role as energy industry transitions to net zero.

Reflect on progress

After each step of the application process, take time to reflect on what you’ve learned and how you can improve. From sharpening interview skills to expanding your industry knowledge, every experience is a chance to grow and prepare for your career journey ahead.

Organise important dates

Track deadlines for each stage of the application process, from submission dates to interview and the required medical appointments, to avoid missing any crucial steps.

Stay positive and flexible

The energy sector is fast-paced and ever-evolving. Demonstrating a willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges can be a big advantage.
