A safe working environment

All applicants should be aware that they are entering an industry with a zero tolerance to drugs and alcohol, and will be required to undertake a random drugs and alcohol screening test at some stage during their apprenticeship.

Working in the energy sector can involve varied and hazardous working conditions:

  • Working outdoors and in adverse weather conditions
  • Shift work
  • Working at height
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Working within highly regulated and controlled areas
  • Working with hazardous equipment and materials within high hazard environments
  • Wearing specialist safety equipment
  • Working away from home for extended periods
  • Working over water
